Muybridge is most noted for developing a system to photograph horses galloping in 1878 which solved the mystery of whether or not all four horse legs are off the ground at once. He went on to document many animals and humans in motion, and his work is considered to be a precursor to the motion picture.
Muybridge / Muggeridge / Muggridge /Muygridge had a colorful history. Highlights include his recovery from a stagecoach accident in my hometown of Fort Smith, Arkansas, the murder of his wife’s lover, and the photographic answer to an inquiry by Leland Stanford (former governor of CA) involving whether or not all four horses legs leave the ground when galloping.
